# The Claims Ledger: What Survived Contact With the Record Date: 2026-07-25 | Summary: Every claim made in a three-hour interview about NASA and Apollo photography, numbered, timestamped, and worked to a public verdict — laid along the interview’s own clock. | Canonical: https://www.treygoff.com/writing/ufo-claims-ledger Jesse Michels spent three hours with the physicist Maaneli Derakhshani on the question of whether NASA censored Apollo photography. That conversation makes a great many assertions. Some of them are true, several are false, and a large number are the kind of claim that sounds like evidence but turns out, on inspection, to be a story about someone who once said something. The usual response to a piece like that is a rebuttal: pick the four weakest claims, knock them down, and treat the rest as beneath notice. That is cheap, and it is also unfalsifiable in its own way — nobody can check what you chose not to address. So this is the other thing instead. Every claim in the episode is logged: 434 of them, each numbered, attributed to the person who made it, stamped with the minute it was said, and sorted into one of twenty-one subjects. Of those, 388 have been worked to a public verdict with the reasoning attached. Forty-six have not, and are marked `unverified` rather than quietly dropped. You can read the result as a list. But the episode is a conversation, not a document, and conversations have a shape in time — they warm up, they wander, they collapse. Averaging them in would let unworked stretches of tape masquerade as neutral ones. Where a window holds fewer than six scored claims, the line breaks rather than continuing — a gap, not a guess. Nothing about this metric is standard, and a different set of weights would draw a different landscape. The weights are printed above so you can decide what you think of the ones chosen. **Two numbers in the source disagree, and the ledger picks one.** The original coverage note states per-verdict totals that differ slightly from the totals you get by counting the per-claim entries, though both sum to 388. This page counts the entries, on the reasoning that the individual verdicts are the primary record and the summary is a derived note. Where you see a count here, it came from the rows. One more artefact worth knowing about: the canonical ids run C001 through C435, which is 435 numbers for 434 claims. `C145` is an unassigned number, not a lost claim. It has been left as a hole rather than closed up, because renumbering a public ledger to make it tidy is how citations rot. ## The record ## What this does and does not settle A verdict here is a judgement about a single assertion, made against the sources named in the reasoning. It is not a verdict on the episode, on either speaker, or on the question of whether anything unusual has ever appeared in a NASA photograph. Nine claims can be confirmed in a row and still be doing no work for the argument they were recruited into; a debunked claim does not retroactively convict the person who repeated it in good faith. What the ledger does settle is narrower and more useful: for any given assertion in those three hours, there is now a public statement of what it was, who made it, when, what was checked, and what was found. Disagree with any of the 388 and the reasoning is sitting right there to argue with. That is the whole point.
